South Paris Collaborative

Here is a podcast of South Paris Collaborative students discussing the issue of the environment.

We also found this information:

The issue is environment. It is not doing well. If we keep on polluting at this rate then the air will not be healthy. If the air is not healthy then our bodies will not be healthy because the air we breathe. We are polluting the ocean by throwing garbage into it. We are polluting the air by using a lot of oil to operate cars and factories that give out Carbon Dioxide. Loggers are cutting down trees. If they cut down the trees most of the pollution will stay in the air. We need a rain forest the size of Australia to stop global warming.
John McCain on Global Warming
John McCain’s legislation last year was aimed at significantly reducing the country’s greenhouse gases such as Methane and Carbon Dioxide. A lot of scientists believe that greenhouse gases are responsible for global warming. He supports the use of alternative energy sources, and nuclear energy.
Barack Obama on Global Warming
Barack Obama wants to make the United States a world wide leader in fighting climate change especially the North Pole by creating an international global warming partnership. Obama would reward farmers, forest owners, and ranchers who restore grasslands and plant trees.

McCain's Ideas, Proposals and Initiatives
~Barack Obama wants to to take lead out of turf fields so children won't get lead poisoning.
~His first year in office included a hard battle with the EPA to make laws about unenvironmental friendly types of paint banished, or outlawed.
~Obama wants to create a program to share climate-freindly technology with other countries
~Obama wants to create a reward program for farmers, owners of woods, and ranchers that rewards them when they practice climate freindly deeds like tree planting or using technology that reduces green house gas in the air.
~He believes that since the U.S.A. is the biggest producer of greenhouse gases we have the biggest responsibiliy of fixing it.
~Wants to gives incentitves to automakers who produce more fuel effiecent vehicles
~Senator Obama believes that the U.S. must take agressive action now to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.
~ Barack Obama supports the decision of our country going environment friendly. That includes, solar energy, wind, and water.
~Wants to protect the Great Lakes, gave Illinois funding to build a barrier to keep Asian Carp out of the lakes because they throw off the ecosystem
· Help create five million new jobs by strategically investing $150 billion over the next ten years to catalyze private efforts to build a clean environmental future.
· Within 10 years, our country will save more oil than we currently import from the Middle East and Venezuela combined together.
· Put 1 million Plug-In Hybrid cars -- cars that can get up to 150 miles per gallon -- on the road by 2015, cars that we will work to make sure are built here in America.
· Ensure 10 percent of our electricity comes from renewable sources by 2012, and 25 percent by 2025.
· Implement an economy-wide cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050.
Obama will continue to work for policies that protect our open spaces and enhance wildlife habitatHe will work to ensure that Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations are regulated appropriately and have access to the right mix of incentives to prevent damage to the air we breathe and the water we drink.

~John McCain wants to build 45 new nuclear power plants.
~John McCain wants to drill more oil in the US so that we aren't spending hundreds of billions of dollars going to other countries and buying oil. We have trillions of dollars of oil in the US if we put it in money. We wouldn't have to depend on forien countries as much.
~John McCain wants to search for more ways in the US to find domestic supplies to save money. And would most likely be better than oil.
~ John McCain wants to put restictions on big buisness and limit the amount of greenhouse gases they can emitt.
~ John McCain wants to invest in nuclear power, and alternate energy
~If you buy a zero carbon emission car that the automakers of America
are making, John McCain will commit a $5,000 tax credit to you.
~John McCain will also give every american 1 dollar if somebody comes up with a battery powered car that uses 70% less oil.
~John McCaim is also telling automakers to make more Flex Fuel Vehicles
and he will try to have %50 percent of cars ffv by 2012.
John McCain will premote more green jobs and green technologies.
John McCain is making a cap-and-trade system. That is when companies or factories or any place is only allowed to emit so much green house gas emissions per…something. If you go over what you are allowed to used you will be heavily fined. If you don’t use all of what you are allowed to, you can sell extras to other companies that need it. This is forcing people to think of new ways to be green so they can save money.
John McCain is going to do something called the Lexington Project. It is supposed to clean up our air, address global warming, and do things about our oil consumption.
He will really try to reduce carbon emissions to 60 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.

Awbrey Park Room 15

The environment is important to the united states because if we don’t do anything to stop global warming, and pollution our people and animals will eventually die. Some causes for global warming are factories, cars, and using gas from cooking. Some ways we can prevent from dying out is using fewer natural gases such as oil and diesel fuel.
In oregon this is a hot issue because people are cutting down trees which is taking away our oxygen and letting carbon dioxide into the air which is really bad for our lungs. Also sense we are close to the ocean oil drilling is also a big problem because it is killing our ocean life.

John McCain’s plan to help with the Environment is:
  • he wants to shorten the u.s dependence from foreign suppliers of fuel, such as oil from other countries including China.
  • also he wants to use less green house gas and use nuclear power. But there is a problem with nuclear gas, it is highly explosive.

Barack Obama’s plan to help with the environment is:
  • he wants the united states to lead world wide efforts to end global warming.
  • create a government program that would share climate-friendly technologies with developing nations.
  • he will also pay farmers to grow more trees, there for making more oxygen.

Awbrey Park - Room 16

This issue relates to our country because many places in our country are being polluted. The air, water, and land are all feeling the effects of Global Warming and pollution.
Global warming is a hot issue for the nation because people and animals are breathing dirty, or polluted, air that is not healthy for them to breath. Littering is also bad because the plants do not have healthy soil to help them grow. Off-shore drilling is also a huge problem for the country.
The environment is a hot issue in our area because our class thought that the world needed help with these problems. Also many people in our area care about the earth and our environment.

John McCain on environment :
  • By 2012 he will return emission levels to the 2005 levels
  • will develop a climate change adaptation plan
Barack Obama on environment :
  • he helped sponsor The Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act
  • He supports reducing green house gases
  • He refuses off -shore drilling
  • He will create millions of new green jobs.

DREAMEXTREME - Medford, Oregon

Describe how this issue relates to the country:

We all live in the environment, and need it to be clean and healthy so that all of us, plus the plants and animals can survive.
We need to stop cutting down trees so that we can breathe.
Oregon borders the Pacific Ocean. If the ocean is polluted or damaged, it directly effects us and our lives.

Senator McCain's Plan

Senator Obama's Plan

McCain wants a cap and trade system to set limits on greenhouse gas emissions. John McCain's cap and trade system will reduce emissions by 66% by 2050.
John McCain will allow government funding to support emission reduction, and research and development of clean coal technologies.
Barack Obama also preposes a cap and trade system to reduse emissons by 80% by 2005. He also wants 25% of our electricity to come from renewable sources by 2025.
Obama will help weatherize homes to reduce wasted energy.
Obama plans to increase fuel economy standards, and ask for the use of low carbon fuel.
Obama will also create a $7,000 tax credit for purchasing vehicles with advanced fuel technologies.
